The Extra Mile
Going the extra mile is one of the teachings of Jesus that has become part of our language. Jesus said:
“Whoever forces you to go one mile,
go with him two.
Give to him who asks of you,
and do not turn away from him
who wants to borrow from you.”
Matthew 5:41-42
As I understand it, Roman soldiers in first century Israel commonly forced Jews to carry something for them for one mile. Jesus taught the Jews not to go only one mile, but to go two. In other words, Jesus taught them to be humble, helpful, and obedient rather than grumbling and complaining. Over the centuries going the extra mile came to mean going above and beyond what is expected.
It always feels good to go the extra mile and to be the recipient of an extra mile kindness. Several weeks ago, the couple who owns our local organic grocery store and one of their team members whom I have come to know and love were all present when I went in to do some shopping. They all kindly asked about Ray’s health. I was surprised and humbled when the wife told me that from now on, Ray is to get a free container of their locally made frozen custard each time we come in.
We had another stop to make before going home, so I asked if I could leave my purchases there until we were ready. I picked them up later, and we headed home. I was surprised again when I unpacked our bag at home and found this note in the bottom.
The note is now on our refrigerator as a happy reminder.
Our friends at Miss Sallie’s Market were generous. They went above and beyond. They went the extra mile.
Going the extra mile is a lesson to teach our children. It will bless others, and it will bless them.
“Give, and it will be given to you.
They will pour into your lap a good measure—
pressed down, shaken together, and running over.
For by your standard of measure
it will be measured to you in return.”
