The New Year That God Made

I love the start of a new day, the start of a new year after a birthday, and the start of a new calendar year on the first of January. On this first day of 2018, let’s remember the fourth day in the history of the world.

Then God said,
“Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens
to separate the day from the night,

Sunset 016
and let them be for signs and for seasons
and for days and years;

Roaring River Sunset
and let them be for lights in the expanse of the heavens
to give light on the earth”; and it was so.

Sunset 1282
God made the two great lights,
the greater light to govern the day,

Sunset 003
and the lesser light to govern the night;
He made the stars also.

Moon reflected in Roaring River
God placed them in the expanse of the heavens
to give light on the earth,

sunlight

and to govern the day and the night,
and to separate the light from the darkness;

 Sky 103
and God saw that it was good.
There was evening and there was morning, a fourth day.
Genesis 1:14

Sunset 031

By the word of the Lord the heavens were made,
And by the breath of His mouth all their host.
Psalm 33:6

Since that first week when God created the heavens and the earth, He has provided nights, days, months, seasons, and years for all His creatures through the specific creations of the fourth day. Therefore, birds know when to migrate, bears know when to hibernate, owls know when to wake up, and we know when to start fresh.

Since God made the spheres and sent them spinning and whirling in space, He has sustained their spinning and whirling. He is the Great Choreographer who assigns each role and who directs the celestial ballet.

Though God is not Himself restricted by time, He has given us the gift of time and the promise of eternity.

This is the promise which He Himself made to us: eternal life.
1 John 2:25
