The Night Watchman

Our friend Darlene told us a story the other day. She once knew a man who had been an alcoholic before he turned to Jesus and became part of Darlene’s church. I’ll call him Tom.

Tom had learned neither to read nor to write, but he hungered for the Word of God. He got cassette tapes of the Old and New Testaments and listened to them over and over.

Tom worked as a night watchman at a government building near Darlene’s home. When she walked for exercise, she passed by that building. As she did, she heard the sound of the King James Bible on Tom’s cassette tape player.

Tom gained a great deal of knowledge of God’s Word through his listening. He also wanted to learn how to lead prayers in public, so he asked their church’s minister to teach him. In Darlene’s words: “He said the prettiest prayers.”

What a beautiful example to us all of seeking first the kingdom of God and His righteousness.

I will meditate on Your precepts
And regard Your ways.
I shall delight in Your statutes;
I will not forget Your word.
Psalm 119:15-16
