Family love stories. Families that last a lifetime. I’m thinking this week of those sweet moments that we spend with our children and the memories that result from those moments.

One day recently, when a couple of our children and their spouses and children were at our house, a game popped into my head. I grabbed a funny pillowcase, stuffed it full of toys our children enjoyed when they were little, and tied on a ribbon to keep the pillowcase closed.

As we sat in a circle, I took the pillowcase from person to person and had them close their eyes while they reached in and chose an object. Keeping their eyes closed, they had to feel of it and guess what it was. One by one they reached in. They dug around to find a familiar object, turned it over and over, guessed what it was, and pulled it out for all to see.

Out came a John Deere™ tractor, plastic nesting barrels, the Fisher Price® Little People® police car, Rainbow Brite™, a pink My Little Pony™, plastic links that hook together, the Fisher Price® Queen Buzzy Bee™ pulltoy, a toy Tupperware® pitcher, the trick can of peanuts with the snake that pops out when you open it, and many, many more.

It was fun to watch each face as he or she had that moment of recollection. I associate memory mostly with the sense of sight, but almost every guess was exactly right. I was amazed and thrilled.

Naturally Ray and our children had an advantage over the spouses, since the toys were ours. Still, the game turned out to be fun for everybody, since the ages of our children and their spouses are close and the toys were from everyone’s era. I loved hearing exclamations like, “We had one of those!”

It was also fun to share these toys with the grandchildren. One of them enjoyed the pillowcase game so much that she wanted me to put her in the pillowcase and guess what she was–again and again!

Your children are blessed because you homeschool. You are together while you all build sweet memories of what you see, hear, taste, smell, and touch. Cherish every moment and be sure to stop sometimes and remember.

Praise the Lord!
I will give thanks to the Lord with all my heart,
In the company of the upright and in the assembly.
Great are the works of the Lord;
They are studied by all who delight in them.
Splendid and majestic is His work,
And His righteousness endures forever.
He has made His wonders to be remembered;
The Lord is gracious and compassionate.
Psalm 111:1-4, NASB
