This Is the Day
As 2024 comes to a close, we have just enjoyed Christmas Day and we look forward to New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. I enjoyed finding this poster in the collection of the Library of Congress. It is called The Red Letter Days and was published by L. Prang & Co. The artist was Lizbeth Bullock Humphrey. She included “Father Time” and a group of children who represent New Year’s Day, Valentine’s Day, Washington’s Birthday, Easter Day, April Fools’ Day, May Day, Decoration Day, Arbor Day, Bunker Hill Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Forefathers’ Day, and Christmas Day.
Miss Humphrey appropriately called those holidays “The Red Letter Days.” On some days, we see special reasons to be grateful, but we also know that every day is a gift from God.
This is the day which the Lord has made;
Let us rejoice and be glad in it.
Psalm 118:24
I’m excited to tell you about a new resource we are calling:
This is the Day to Pray.
Our son John is spearheading this effort. I have enjoyed working with him on this project, along with others from our team. The idea is simple. On our new This is the Day to Pray website, we have stated our purpose. It reads:
Hope. Joy. Peace.
It’s easy to lose sight of these when we see the darkness around us. But God has not left us alone.
He has given us a powerful tool. We can talk to the Creator of the universe with confidence. No matter our age or ability, we can change the course of history through prayer.
Let’s do that together in 2025. God wants to hear from us. This is the day to pray.
Starting January 1, we will guide you each day in praying for a specific need by sharing a story from history that happened on that date.
Our goal is to help all of us think about world events in a new way. Let’s be thankful for the blessings God has provided. Let’s trust Him to hear us as we bring our concerns before Him.
Sign up to receive notifications of new content by email or text five days a week (Monday through Friday) starting January 1.
Please don’t feel pressured to sign up. This is a free resource that is available for you, but we know your plate is full and you may not be able to add one more thing. If you would like to try it for a few days, go here to sign up to receive notifications by email or text five days a week (Monday through Friday) starting January 1.
These are our theme verses for this new resource:
Rejoice always. Pray without ceasing.
In everything give thanks:
for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
This is the day that the Lord has made;
we will rejoice and be glad in it.
Psalm 118:24
Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace,
that we may obtain mercy,
and find grace to help in time of need.
James 4:16
