To Wonder and to Marvel

On Monday morning Ray and I watched an episode of Mr. Rogers with some of our grandchildren. He sang his beautiful song, “Did You Know?” which includes the lines: “Did you know that it’s all right to wonder?” and “Did you know that it’s all right to marvel?”

The world needs more people who know that it’s all right to wonder and to marvel, people who are willing to be surprised and thrilled and excited, people who are willing to admit that they have more to learn, people willing to be impressed. How refreshing it is to be with those people.

It is very important to communicate to children that they are okay, even if they don’t already know x, y, or z. One joy of the homeschooling mama is the opportunity to encourage and cultivate a sense of wonder in her children — wonder at . . .

Baby lambs . . .

and dewdrops . . .

and waterfalls . . .

and baby ferns . . .

and neon . . .

and fog . . .

and first snowfalls.

Another joy is communicating to them how surprised and thrilled and excited and impressed we are with them and what they can do.

And yet another is sharing our own wonder at what God has done.

Many, Lord my God, are the wonders which You have done,
And Your thoughts toward us;
There is no one to compare with You.
If I would declare and speak of them,
They would be too numerous to count.
Psalm 40:5
