Tomorrow Is a Special Day of Prayer

“Every single person I talked to mentioned God,” said David Begnaud of his time in Cookeville, Tennessee, last week. Ray and I have rejoiced at the faith-filled response we have witnessed after last week’s tornado. Begnaud is the lead national correspondent for “CBS This Morning.” He was one of many reporters who came to Cookeville to cover the tragedy. A reporter at a CBS affiliate in Knoxville interviewed Begnaud about his experience. He said that Tennesseans reacted to the storms in a unique way. He said that he was inspired by the resilience that seemed to bond them together.*

While reading news stories about the coronavirus, I have often thought about the responses we have witnessed locally. At the same time, I noticed that I had not read a single news story that said anything at all about prayer or about faith.

I was happy this morning when I learned that President Trump has called for a national day of prayer tomorrow. He announced: “It is my great honor to declare Sunday, March 15th as a National Day of Prayer. We are a Country that, throughout our history, has looked to God for protection and strength in times like these.”

Following is an excerpt from President George Washington’s Thanksgiving Proclamation of 1789:

Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor– and whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness.

Our nation and the world needs God’s protective hand and healing power right now. I trust that God will do mighty things in the midst of this worldwide crisis. Pray with me:

  • That God gives each of us the peace that passes understanding as you handle this current crisis in your own family.
  • That He comforts the brokenhearted here and around the world who have suffered because of this virus and that He protects everyone.
  • That He gives every person in every place wisdom.
  • That people all over the world will cry out to the only One Who has the power to help.

Be anxious for nothing,
but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving
let your requests be made known to God.
And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension,
will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:6-7
