Tweeting People Well

As Ray and I drove to Louisville a few weeks ago, I noticed a rural Kentucky church sign with words I thought were wonderful. I confess that many church signs make me groan. “You think that will draw people in?” I often wonder, but these words, like the one in the photo below, were spot on. Naturally, I thought about writing about it for you.

Photographer Carol Highsmith found this message on a storefront church in Clarksdale, Mississippi, in 2017. Courtesy of Photographs in the Ben May Charitable Trust Collection of Mississippi Photographs in the Carol M. Highsmith Archive, Library of Congress, Prints and Photographs Division.

I don’t see myself as exactly cutting edge when it comes to popular culture, so when I saw those words on the church sign in Kentucky, I figured that I was way behind the times and that many people had already read them online. Sure enough, I did a search and there they were. Still, they are worth repeating:

Tweet others the way you want to be tweeted.

I, for one, have never tweeted anything. One reason is that I have read many tweets whose authors have not followed this takeoff on the Golden Rule Jesus taught us in the Sermon on the Mount:

In everything, therefore,
treat people the same way
you want them to treat you,
for this is the Law and the Prophets.
Matthew 7:12

I know nothing else about the following book by Germany Kent, but I like its title: You Are What You Tweet. According to one source, Kent is the originator of this Twitter Golden Rule, but I also found a book by Ruth Doherty, entitled Tweet Others as You Would Wish to Be Tweeted: A Scripture-Based Guide to Social Media for the Church. Again, I have no personal knowledge of the content, but I like the title.

Tweeting and posting and sharing are exactly like our spoken words. They come from our hearts. Tweeting, posting, sharing, and speaking can bring healing or havoc into the heart, soul, and mind of a person. Homeschooling mamas have the opportunity every day to use their words to heal the hearts, souls, and minds — and bodies — of their children.

Pleasant words are a honeycomb,
Sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.
Proverbs 16:24

  1. I don’t tweet either but I love this post!
Social Media is a bit out of hand. Folks used to write out long letters and then tear them up. Got things off their chest and no one got hurt.
That’s not possible with tweeting. Once it’s out there, it’s too late.

    Thanks Charlene
