Waiting

I’ve been waiting for this lone iris to bloom. On Monday it seemed to be closed tight. I was surprised to see it open yesterday morning.

Lots of waiting is like that. We don’t have a clear idea about when the wait will be over and then suddenly what we have been waiting to happen happens.

Waiting for an iris to open isn’t hard. I was simply keeping my eye on it. The bud held such promise, so I was looking forward to seeing the bloom in its full glory.

God reminds us about waiting again and again in His Word. He knows it’s hard.

Waiting takes courage.

Wait for the Lord;
Be strong and let your heart take courage;
Yes, wait for the Lord.
Psalm 27:14

Waiting involves prayer.

I waited patiently for the Lord;
And He inclined to me and heard my cry.
Psalm 40:1

Waiting takes faith.

My soul, wait in silence for God only,
For my hope is from Him.
Psalm 62:5

Ray and I enjoyed this sunset on Sunday evening.

Then last night we enjoyed another sunset. We were looking at the same part of the sky, but the view was very different. When we looked out our kitchen window, we saw a cloudy sky that looked as if rain were imminent. However, just below the clouds and above the hills, the sun was shining so brilliantly that I looked twice to make sure it wasn’t fire. I tried to get a picture from the front porch, but it isn’t as brilliant as the scene we saw moments earlier. Try to imagine that the light above the hills is a brilliant orange.

Just because something looks one way right now does not mean it will look the same way at a later time. When times are tough, it is easy to believe that they will never get better. However, in tough times and wonderful times, we can trust our Lord; and we can wait. Waiting is an act of faith in our trustworthy Lord. Waiting in faith brings a reward.

The Lord favors those who fear Him,
Those who wait for His lovingkindness.
Psalm 147:11
