“We Love Each Other”

I recently needed some help at a local business. I called and spoke to one of their employees, who is also a friend from church. I’ll call her June. As always, she was very helpful. One Wednesday evening at church, June and I set up a time for me to come in to implement what she had advised. An unexpected responsibility came up that day and the appointment slipped my mind. I called June on Friday to apologize and try again. The man who answered the phone said she wasn’t in. I mentioned talking to her the next week and he said she wouldn’t be in then either. I assumed she was on vacation.

When I saw June at church on Sunday, I went over to apologize. She told me that she would not be back at her job. I was floored. She filled me in on the details. This local business had been bought out by a large corporation a few years ago. On Thursday afternoon, June had been called in to a meeting. There she learned that decision-makers at the corporation had decided to send her and 29 other corporation employees home for good. My heart ached for June. Characteristic of this godly woman, a few minutes later I heard her tell another friend (whose husband’s serious health concerns had recently resurfaced) that she would be available to help with driving now (his doctors are two hours away).

On the following Wednesday I asked June about her new days of freedom. She told me honestly that it had been hard, but that she had been on the phone almost all the time because so many had called to check on her and to offer their condolences. I asked how long she had been at her job. The answer: 38 years! Concerning the calls from friends, June said that that’s how folks are here in our county: “We love each other.”

Now as to the love of the brethren,
you have no need for anyone to write to you,
for you yourselves are taught by God to love one another;
1 Thessalonians 4:9, NASB

  1. Similar thing happened to me. I was at my job for 35 years, when the “downsizing” hit me in 2009. Never thought that I would be starting over at this stage of my life! But we do what we have to do, and just hope that we can come back and survive this downarw spiral!!
