What is a heroine? Look in the mirror.

I recently recorded a video to tell you how I feel about you. I hope it’s a blessing. You can watch it here.

Through the years, I have reminded you several times that you are a heroine. That is the main message of the video. I know how I define heroine, but I decided yesterday to see how Merriam Webster defines the word. I have reworded the three definitions that I like best.

  • A heroine is a woman who is admired for what she does and who she is. Others watch her and emulate what they see.
  • A heroine is the principal female character in a book or drama.
  • A heroine is the central female during an event or a period of time.

I admire you for what you do and who you are. You are a literal VIP and a heroine. Your children are watching you and emulating what they see.

You are the principal female character in your own family’s drama.

You are the central female in the life of your husband and the lives of your children while they are growing up. Though you likely hope that your son will marry and make his wife the central female in his life, you will remain a central female in your son’s (or sons’) life and the central female in the lives of your daughters for all their days.

If you are like me, all of that didn’t occur to you on your wedding day or the day your first child was born. The reason I keep saying that you are a heroine is because you take your mothering responsibilities so seriously—just as you should. You don’t shrink from the job God gave you to do. You plow in and succeed with love and commitment. Being faithful to do that will bless your children all their days. Solomon told his own son the blessings of what he learned from his mama.

My son, comply with the commandment of your father,
And do not ignore the teaching of your mother;
Bind them continually on your heart;
Tie them around your neck.
When you walk, they will guide you;
When you sleep, they will watch over you;
And when you awake, they will talk to you.
Proverbs 6:20-22
