When You Feel Like You Don’t Have All You Need

Yesterday I began listening to Persuasion by Jane Austen. The audiobook reader began with a brief biography of Austen. She said that Austen was the daughter of a minister and that he was also her tutor. Austen died in 1817, a few months after James Monroe became president. I was on a waiting list with the Nashville Public Library for the opportunity to listen to this book. Jane Austen’s father was certainly a homeschool hero and his daughter a homeschool success story, since people are still reading her books!

Also yesterday Ray read results from a new survey from USA Today. In the survey, 59% of parents with at least one child in Kindergarten through grade 12 said that they would likely pursue at-home learning this fall rather than sending their children back to school. How I would love to have a forum to speak to all of those parents. I’d love to tell them, “You can do it!”

A few days ago I wrote about weariness and about Jesus’ promise for rest for the weary. In addition to rest, He also gives us the strength to do whatever important work He gives us to do.

I receive a devotional each day from my sweet Aunt Dot, who receives it from my sweet friend Sara, whose husband was the minister at my church when I was in high school and college. Sara’s verse for yesterday is another part of my inspiration for today’s post. I have included it below along with the verse that comes before it.

For every mama who is considering homeschooling in the fall and for each of you who is already doing it faithfully, these truths from God’s Word offer comfort and affirmation. Pay special attention to the last line: “to him who lacks might He increases power.” When you think about your weaknesses and the skills you don’t have right now for homeschooling, remember that you don’t have to have everything you need today. God keeps giving and increasing. You can trust Him.

Do you not know? Have you not heard?
The Everlasting God, the Lord,
the Creator of the ends of the earth
Does not become weary or tired.
His understanding is inscrutable.
He gives strength to the weary,
And to him who lacks might He increases power.
Isaiah 40:28-29
