Who made sure the clocks fell back at your house?

This weekend as Ray and I anticipated the annual fall back to standard time, we enjoyed remembering a family spring forward story from many years ago. At the time, we were living in Illinois and our parents were living in Tennessee. In those days before cell phones, calls to our parents were something of an event because of long distance telephone charges.

On the Saturday evening before the annual spring forward event, Ray went around our house resetting all the clocks. I told Ray that, if it were up to me, I probably would just add an hour for a while. Ray and his dad talked on the phone that night. During the conversation, Ray told his dad that he had already set the clocks forward. Ray’s dad said that he had already done that, too.

One day during the next week, I called Mother and the subject of clocks came up. She said that she hadn’t changed hers yet and was just adding an hour!

What is that about the apple not falling far from the tree? One key to a fulfilling marriage is accepting differences between husbands and wives—and their families, even when other people’s ways of doing things seem very different from the “right way” we learned growing up. We have so much to learn from one another. Humility helps us do that.

Therefore, accept one another,
just as Christ also accepted us
to the glory of God.
