In one of the photo sources I am using for From Adam to Us, I can refine my search so I don’t have to wade through all 4000-plus photos that come up when I type in “Palace of Versailles” (I  was in Paris visiting with Louis XIV yesterday). I can click a box that tells the search engine to leave out any photos that have people in them. This is important when you are illustrating history. This way you don’t include photos of camera bags and flip flops in a lesson set in 1639 (that’s when Louis XIV was born).

Sometimes it’s a challenge to find a photo taken at just the right angle so that a cathedral doesn’t have a skyscraper beside the steeple — fine for vacation photos but not so fine for illustrating four hundred years ago. Sometimes though the skyscrapers and the people just have to go in the curriculum, because I just can’t find anything else. Actually I like to include them sometimes. I figure it illustrates to children that modern people still think the place, person, or event we are writing about is important. Because it is important, some people work to keep it protected and in good repair, and many people visit it.

I recently saw this striking sky outside. I like how it illustrates God’s amazing power.

Only God can make this kind of sunset. However, there is evidence here of one of His sixth day creations, namely people. People created in God’s image, namely the Wright Brothers, learned how to fly; and God used their creation of the airplane to paint this beautiful sunset with its pink lines of airplane exhaust.

I wonder how the little people in your house will impact the kinds of photos people may take of them someday. You are doing such important work. Whether photos of your children and their work end up in a history book or in a family photo album, you are making a remarkable difference in the history of the world.

What is man that You take thought of him,
And the son of man that You care for him?
Yet You have made him a little lower than God,
And You crown him with glory and majesty!
You make him to rule over the works of Your hands . . . .
Psalm 8:4-6
