You Can’t Cover Everything!

“What if I don’t cover everything?” asks the worried homeschooling mama who is trying so hard to do a good job.

I’m not sure she would like my short answer to that question, which is this: “You can’t!”

I have good news though. You can’t cover everything, but you can count everything!

Instead of wishing you had time to go to the Big Band concert at the park on Friday night, take time off from “school” earlier in the week to take care of some needed homemaking chore, enjoy the concert, and count it as music and the history of the home front during World War II.

Instead of wondering when your child can find time to write thank you notes for their birthday presents, assign them thank you notes during the time you have dedicated to language arts.

Instead of saying, “No, we can’t go to the park today,” say yes, let your children use your phone to take pictures of all the wildflowers they see, and identify five of them when you get home. Call it nature study.

You can’t cover everything, but you can count everything.

You shall therefore take these words of mine to heart and to soul;
and you shall tie them as a sign on your hand,
and they shall be as frontlets on your forehead.
You shall also teach them to your sons,
speaking of them when you sit in your house,
when you walk along the road, when you lie down,
and when you get up.
Deuteronomy 11:18-19
