You, Me, and the Will of God

Stars always do the will of God, so do birds and trees and planets and butterflies and snails and turtles and streams and on the list goes. God is in charge.

He sends forth springs in the valleys;
They flow between the mountains . . .

They give drink to every beast of the field;
The wild donkeys quench their thirst.

Beside them the birds of the heavens dwell;
They lift up their voices among the branches.

He waters the mountains from His upper chambers;
The earth is satisfied with the fruit of His works.
Psalm 104:10-13

God’s will happens all around us. Our task is to stay within His will ourselves and to train our children to do the same.

In John 7, Jesus spoke to a crowd. One of the issues that came up that day was the fact that Jesus was from Galilee. “Surely the Christ is not going to come from Galilee, is He?” someone asked ( John 7:41).

After the conversation was over and Jesus was gone, the Pharisees discussed the situation. Nicodemus, a Pharisee who did believe in Jesus, spoke up in His defense. “Search, and see that no prophet arises out of Galilee,” they commanded Nicodemus (John 7:52).

How arrogant and downright silly. If God wanted to send a prophet from Galilee, no command by a Pharisee could possibly stop that from happening. These thoughts remind me of a beautiful old hymn by Mrs. C. H. Morris. May it be your prayer and mine for ourselves, for our children, and for all the generations from ourselves forward.

Sweet Will of God

My stubborn will at last hath yielded;
I would be Thine, and Thine alone;
And this the prayer my lips are bringing,
Lord, let in me Thy will be done.

Sweet will of God, still fold me closer,
Till I am wholly lost in Thee.

I’m tired of sin, footsore and weary,
The darksome path hath dreary grown;
But now a light has ris’n to cheer me;
I find in Thee my Star, my Sun.

Sweet will of God, still fold me closer,
Till I am wholly lost in Thee.

Thy precious will, O conqu’ring Savior,
Doth now embrace and compass me;
All discords hushed, my peace a river,
My soul, a prisoned bird set free.

Sweet will of God, still fold me closer,
Till I am wholly lost in Thee.

Shut in with Thee, O Lord, forever,
My wayward feet no more to roam;
What pow’r from Thee my soul can sever?
The center of God’s will my home.

Sweet will of God, still fold me closer,
Till I am wholly lost in Thee.

Now the God of peace,
who brought up from the dead
the great Shepherd of the sheep
through the blood of the eternal covenant,
even Jesus our Lord,
equip you in every good thing to do His will,
working in us that which is pleasing in His sight,
through Jesus Christ,
to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen.
Hebrews 13:20-21
