Welcome!

Last night Mother, Ray, and I went to the home of our daughter and her family for dinner. Before we came, they had pulled their car out of the garage so Mother wouldn’t have to get wet in the rain. When we neared the garage, the door rose before us. Our son-in-law, granddaughter, and grandson were standing inside. The children smiled and waved excitedly. Everything about them said, “Welcome. I am so glad you are here!”

It wasn’t as if we hadn’t seen them in a long time. They were at our house the day before and the day before that!

Inside, our daughter treated us with a delicious supper. We sat at the table the whole time we were there, enjoying our meal and watching digital pictures from their recent trip out of town. When the meal was over, two sweet children were sitting in my lap.

When it was time to go, we experienced the exact scene we had seen when we arrived. As we pulled out of sight, I could still see a little hand waving bye.

I thought about how nice it would be if adults greeted one another with the kind of enthusiasm and warm welcome our grandchildren greeted us with last night.

When I sat down to write this to you, I searched for the word welcome at the Library of Congress. I found:

Governor General of Canada welcomed to Washington, December 6, 1927
Governor General of Canada welcomed to Washington, December 6, 1927
Lady Astor welcomed at Capitol, Washington, D.C., 1938
New French Ambassador welcomed to D.A.R. Congress, Washington, D.C., April 18, 1937
Lady Astor welcomed at Capitol, Washington, D.C., 1938
Lady Astor welcomed at Capitol, Washington, D.C., 1938

. . . . but none of those welcomes held a candle to the welcome we received last night.

But Jesus said, “Let the children alone,
and do not hinder them from coming to Me;
for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”
Matthew 19:14

Did you get one complete blog post at 7:00 a.m. Central Time yesterday and another strange, incomplete one at 10:00 a.m.? This is so embarrassing. On rare occasions, the blog program I use does strange things and simply will not let me save my work. That happened twice last night. It was midnight before I finally got it to work correctly. I was so ready for bed by then that I didn’t think to delete the defective one, and it went out at 10 this morning. Oops!
