Election 2016

“A tranquil and quiet life.” Ahhh . . . . That’s an appealing description.

Paul told Timothy how to accomplish a tranquil and quiet life.

First of all, then, I urge that
entreaties and prayers,
petitions and thanksgivings,
be made on behalf of all men,
for kings and all who are in authority,
so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life
in all godliness and dignity.
1 Timothy 2:1-2

I’ve written before about being at peace in spite of the news. July is another month when we, as individuals, and everyone in our whole nation could use a good dose of peace. As we all know, our news media emphasizes the sensational and the negative. While it is true that terrible things happen and that terrible things have happened this July, the tranquil and quiet lives lived in the world every day remain out of the spotlight while turmoil and noise stay in. It’s turmoil and the noise that tempt us to fear.

For me, this is another presidential election cycle when I am not excited about my choices–and sometimes I even get afraid. But God gave us a solution to this election. Let’s look at that solution again.

First of all, then, I urge that
entreaties and prayers,
petitions and thanksgivings,
be made on behalf of all men,
for kings and all who are in authority,
so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life
in all godliness and dignity.
1 Timothy 2:1-2

I am praying that Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton will give their whole hearts and lives to the King of kings. Would you join me in praying for that, too?

When I say this, I’m not judging either of them as to their relationship with Jesus. Since I Timothy tells me that God wants me to pray for all who are in authority so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity, I know He wants me to pray for these, one of whom I presume will be the commander in chief and the head of state of our country in just over six months.

In connection with the release of our updated Exploring Government curriculum, my husband Ray has made this  video about our government. I think it will encourage you.

The next time we see a bumper sticker or a clip of a campaign speech or hear the name of a politician that tempts us to wring our hands, let’s pray for him or her, while remembering that:

It is better to take refuge in the Lord
Than to trust in princes.
Psalm 118:9

This election cannot change the truth that:

. . . Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, [is] the firstborn of the dead,
and the ruler of the kings of the earth.
To Him who loves us and released us from our sins by His blood—
and He has made us to be a kingdom, priests to His God and Father—
to Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.
Revelation 1:5-6

  1. A couple of more encouraging words from the Word of God:
Fret not yourself because of evildoers; be not envious of wrongdoers! For they will soon fade like the grass and wither like the green herb. Psalm 37:1-2

Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices!
