The city of Colorado Springs is home to 465,000 people and a surprising assortment of places to see. On a clear day, you can see snow-capped Pike’s Peak. The Air Force Academy trains cadets on the northern edge of the city. Since 1994, more than five million people have visited the Focus on the Family ministry in Colorado Springs. And the city is also home to perhaps the most beautiful city park I have seen.

In the late 1800s, railroad tycoon Charles Elliott Perkins began purchasing land with beautiful rock formations in Colorado Springs.

Perkins intended to donate the land to the city, but died before the plans were completed. His family honored his memory by donating 480 acres. In 1909 the city accepted the donation with four stipulations: the park would be open free of charge to visitors, no intoxicating liquors could be made or sold within the park, no buildings would be constructed except those needed to maintain the park, and the park would forever be called Garden of the Gods.

The scenery the one true God created there is magnificent. Behind us is the gigantic balanced rock.

It doesn’t look so gigantic in that picture, but the closer you get the better the perspective becomes.

Ray and I had fun getting under it and pretending that we were holding it up. Here’s Ray.

Just as I got under it to take my turn, a trolley tour rounded the corner right beside the rock and much to my surprise the guide pointed me out to his trolley full of guests.

Do you ever feel on display as you try to find balance in the multitude of roles you play every day?

Balance. That is one of my greatest challenges. I love how Jesus lived the perfect balance. He knew Who He was. He knew why He was here. He stayed true to His mission. He prayed to His Father. He lived one day at a time.

For I have come down from heaven,
not to do My own will,
but the will of Him who sent Me.
John 6:38

In the early morning, while it was still dark,
Jesus got up, left the house,
and went away to a secluded place,
and was praying there.
Mark 1:35
