A Change of Plans

We really think it’s going to happen this time. We really think we are going to get high speed Internet out our way very soon! The phone company has already laid the fiber optic cable, so start keeping your ear to the ground.

When the New Madrid earthquakes occurred on February 7, 1812, the Mississippi River flowed backwards. Though the epicenter was in Missouri, the earthquake was so powerful that it made church bells ring in Boston. It woke up President James Madison in the White House.

The reason you need to keep your ear to the ground is that America may soon experience another widespread phenomenon. That strange sound you all hear at the exact moment the phone company hooks up our new Internet service just might be the Notgrass History team shouting, “Hallelujah!”

Alas, it was not hooked up when we uploaded our latest curriculum to the printer. I had to go to nearby Cookeville (again) and stay at a hotel with high speed Internet. I arrived at about ten o’clock in the morning. I went to the counter to ask for a room. The clerk gave me a key card and wrote room 127 on it.

I walked to room 127 and found the door open. A member of the cleaning staff was inside cleaning the room.

I walked back to the front desk to inform the clerk. “I am  sorry,” he said. He crossed out 127 and wrote 126.

I walked to room 126 and found a cart propping open the door.

I walked back to the front desk and told the clerk. This time he walked with me to room 128 and opened the door with his pass key card. He crossed out 127 and wrote 128.

I set up my computer on the desk in room 128 and settled down to the task ahead.

In a few minutes, someone knocked on my door. I opened it to find a hotel employee who appeared to be a manager of some sort. She was surprised to see me and said, “Oh. I was just coming to inspect the room.”

“They sure don’t know who is in their rooms,” I thought. They didn’t know that, but they did have delicious tea. When I walked to the lobby late that night, the young man behind the desk complimented my dress. When they ran out of the tea that was my favorite, someone found me some more. The staff didn’t get all the details just right, but they made my stay very pleasant.

It’s November. Have you had to cross out some of your plans for this school year and write in something different? Have you had to do that twice already? It happens. You’re human. You can’t foresee the future perfectly. Don’t fret. You are much more than your best laid plans that didn’t turn out as you had hoped. You are God’s beloved whom He created in His very own image. He loves you so.

Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God,
that He may exalt you at the proper time,
casting all your anxiety on Him,
because He cares for you.
1 Peter 5:6-7

  1. We had fiber optic cable laid about a year after we moved out to the countryside of Oklahoma. The resulting high speed internet was so amazing! Currently have 3 college students living at home doing online studies comfortably. It will change your life!:-)
