When our granddaughter Eva and I went to the art show last Saturday afternoon, we visited an eclectic booth with an unusual assortment of items made from “found objects.”

  • A candle chandelier with clear punch cups for candle holders.
  • A birdbath made from a crystal lamp base and a crystal bowl.
  • A tin woodman made from cans.

The tin woodman came home with me. He’s living with us in the house right now, but I expect him to move to the garden soon. Be sure to notice that he has a heart now. I wouldn’t want him to cry and start to rust.

As Eva and I looked at the pretty creations, I assumed that I was looking at the work of an entrepreneur, but the proprietress in charge of the booth asked me if I knew about the organization sponsoring it. I told her I didn’t and she began to explain.

She and other parents in her area have formed an organization to raise funds for the care of their adult children who are developmentally handicapped. They have already built one home and are raising money for a second. Evidently the organization does more than simply build the homes, because she said that it gives them peace of mind knowing that their children will be cared for when they are gone.

After explaining the purpose of the booth, she showed me various crafts and told me that the adult children do what they can to help make the things to sell.

While I was visiting Eva and her mama and daddy, one of Eva’s favorite things to do with me was to say “book,” take my finger, and lead me to the bookshelf in her room. One of her dozens of picks was Runaway Bunny by Margaret Wise Brown. In this book, a little boy bunny tells his mama bunny that he is going to run away. On page after page, he tells his mama a different way that he is going to leave her; and on page after page, his mama tells him how she will come and find him. In the end, he says that he might as well just stay there and be her little bunny.

A devoted mama is always a devoted mama. I am glad I got to meet a wise, brave, and creative one last Saturday.

We know love by this, that He laid down His life for us;
and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.
1 John 3:16

You are laying down your life every day for your children. I’m so proud of you.
