Every Second Counts

As I sat down last night to write this post about the preciousness of time, I wondered how to illustrate it. Then I remembered a clock that Ray and I saw in 2014 when we were privileged to visit Vancouver, British Columbia. As we walked in the Gastown district, we came upon the Gastown Steam Clock, built in 1977. As you see in this closeup of the base, horologist Raymond L. Saunders designed and built it.

As I read this brass plate last night, I wondered about the meaning of horologist. Here’s the definition I found which wasn’t particularly helpful: An horologist is a person skilled in the practice or theory of horology. Then, of course, I had to find the definition of horology. It is the science of the measurement of time, or timekeeping. Well, now I know.

Here Ray stands beside the clock.

Look closely at my photo by the clock and you can see steam rising from its top.

Now, for my story . . .

While visiting our eleven- and eight-year-old grandsons last week, the eight-year-old had a question for his Little. “Why do grandparents spoil grandchildren?” he asked me. The answer came to me quickly: “Because grandparents know that every second together counts.”

So teach us to number our days,
That we may present to You a heart of wisdom.
Psalm 90:12
