Getting Used to the Dark

Dollar General is the go-to store in our boonies little town (have I said that I love our boonies little town?). When we stopped in the other day, I brought home a little solar-powered snowman (cost me all of $1.50). I started to say that he sits in the window by my desk, but actually he dances in the window. That is except when the sun goes down. That’s when he stands still. When the sun is shining brightly, he really boogies; but when it’s just about dusk, he’s “a’movin’ real slow.”

Our power went out yesterday morning, but I didn’t realize it. I knew there was no power in the office, but I thought Mike had turned it off to do something electrical in The Project or that something going on in there had caused it to go off without their realizing it.

I found Ray and Mike in the unfinished laundry room (that has no windows) and told them that the power was off. They had one not-so-bright, battery-powered light in there; I thought maybe they didn’t know. They teased me, but not unmercifully, when I told them. Duh, they had noticed.

I worked almost all day yesterday trying to get some order back into my world. You know how it is when The (latest) Project is taking over your home — new light fixtures in the living room, discarded light fixtures and power tools (and lots of dirt) in the dining room, and . . . Well, you know how it is.

Clara came over to be Little’s little helper. We worked for a good while upstairs with our only light coming through the windows (well, actually I worked and she played, which was just what I expected; I just wanted her good company). Once or twice I forgot and tried to turn on a light to no avail.

Clara noticed a coloring book in the stuff I was putting away and asked to color. I went into the closet where I keep art supplies. It was too dark to see in there, so I headed downstairs to the office where I keep a box of crayons. To my surprise, the power was back on! Boy, did I feel silly–just working away in the dark when I could have had some lights on.

We live in a world where many people are used to the dark. I’m glad you are rearing your children in the light.

For everyone who does evil hates the Light,
and does not come to the Light
for fear that his deeds will be exposed.
John 3:20
