. . . from 81 years ago! Once upon a time NBC radio broadcast an annual Congressional Children’s show. The Congressional Club, founded in 1908 to foster friendship between the wives of U.S. senators and members of the House of Representatives, sponsored the show. The club still exists. Now its members include current and former spouses of U.S. senators and representatives, justices of the U.S. Supreme Court, and the president’s cabinet.

In this photograph, four-year-old Nancy Anderson practices for the show which is to air the following Saturday. Her father was Representative John Z. Anderson from California. Nancy was one of several children who sang and played a variety of musical instruments for the show.

I can imagine families from all over the country gathered by their radios on that Saturday in 1939. Wouldn’t it be fun to have an old-fashioned “radio show” at your house? Children could sing, play an instrument, read a story or poem, or tell a joke. It would be a fun family activity, and with technology, they could even share the show with loved ones across town or far away.

Therefore encourage one another
and build up one another,
just as you also are doing.
1 Thessalonians 5:11
