Humility and Confidence

One of the features of the Bible app on my phone is a daily Bible verse. I thought of you when I read Sunday’s verse:

He leads the humble in justice,
And He teaches the humble His way.
Psalm 25:9

God teaches the humble His way. In fact, it’s nigh unto impossible to teach anyone but the humble. We people are a combination of:

  • Amazing creations made in the very image of God and
  • Sinners in desperate need of our Savior.

We are powerful and we are needy. We are phenomenal and we are weak. One of the many challenging responsibilities of being a mama is helping each of our children know both of these truths about himself or herself.

Earlier in Psalm 25, David asks God for instruction.

Make me know Your ways, O Lord;
Teach me Your paths.
Lead me in Your truth and teach me,
For You are the God of my salvation;
For You I wait all the day.
Psalm 25:4-5

David tells us that instruction is a part of the character of God:

Good and upright is the Lord;
Therefore He instructs sinners in the way.
Psalm 25:8

And:

Who is the man who fears the Lord?
He will instruct him in the way he should choose.
Psalm 25:12

When I went out to water my flowers yesterday morning, a spider had decorated my hook. The God Who taught the spider to weave beautiful webs has a lifetime of lessons to teach us, lessons as necessary to our well-being as the web is to the spider.

God teaches us because He loves us. He loves us too much not to! You teach your children because you love them — and you love them too much not to!

In college some courses have prerequisites. Humility is a prerequisite for all learning.

A child learning to read — or any person young or old learning to do anything — needs to have confidence in the skills he already knows and a willingness to humbly learn what he doesn’t know yet. The wise mama nurtures both.

Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord,
and He will exalt you.
James 4:10
