Ideas Matter–For Good or Evil

I finally finished the 37-hour audiobook history of the world from the twenties to the nineties. I don’t recommend it. Whew! I am tired of learning about totalitarian regimes killing millions of people over and over again. As a history writer, whose current project is a world history for grades one through four, and, more importantly, someone who supports and proofreads for Ray who writes for high school students, I needed to learn some of the lessons I learned.

This is the verse that came to mind not long after I heard the last word this past Saturday evening:

See to it that no one takes you captive
through philosophy and empty deception . . .
Colossians 2:8a

This happened over and over again during the twentieth century. People were taken captive by one movement and so-called solution and philosophy and ism after another—Communism, imperialism, Leninism, Marxism, Maoism, Nazism, Stalinism, totalitarianism.

Let’s see what else God wanted the Colossians to know about philosophy and empty deception:

See to it that no one takes you captive
through philosophy and empty deception,
according to the tradition of men,
according to the elementary principles of the world,
rather than according to Christ.
For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form,
and in Him you have been made complete,
and He is the head over all rule and authority . . .
Colossians 2:8-10

Jesus is the head over ALL rule and authority. Our children need to know that. Thank you for homeschooling them.

We are destroying speculations
and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God,
and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ . . .
2 Corinthians 10:5
