It’s Fall, Y’all

The leaves have turned in our little corner of the world. As cute signs and T-shirts say in the South, “It’s fall, y’all.” I had several errands in town yesterday. The most fun was stopping by Pappy’s antique store. I love chatting with the owner Sheryle. As usual, she told me about the amazing things her homeschooled grandchildren are doing out in Idaho. She is so very proud of her only child and his wife and children. They do sound amazing.

It feels as if God infused the trees with color while I was in town or perhaps He changed the lighting somehow. All I know is the trees seemed suddenly to be even more beautiful as I drove home, even beneath the cloudy skies. At first I told myself that I should wait for a sunny day to take photos, but they were so pretty that I decided to go ahead.

Daylight saving time ends after we go to sleep on Saturday night. God has done it again. He has transformed the beautiful blue October sky to the gray November one with a beauty of its own. It’s time.

Then God said, “Let there be lights
in the expanse of the heavens
to separate the day from the night,
and let them be for signs and for seasons
and for days and years.
Genesis 1:14

The high mountains are for the wild goats;
The cliffs are a refuge for the shephanim.
He made the moon for the seasons;
The sun knows the place of its setting.
Psalm 104:18-19

. . . He did good and gave you
rains from heaven and fruitful seasons,
satisfying your hearts with food and gladness.
Acts 14:17

O Lord, how many are Your works!
In wisdom You have made them all;
The earth is full of Your possessions.
Psalm 104:27

We can trust God with changing seasons, the ones that happen every year and the ones that occur in our children’s lives and our own. A friend recently related what happened at a Bible study she attended. The women discussed what ages they would like to live again. The women mentioned various ages. One woman said that seventy-five was a good year for her. It was an encouragement to the younger women that this woman embraced age seventy-five.

During a recent ladies Bible class at our church, our teacher told us about meeting a man who told her about his near-death experience. The man said that he met Jesus. He told Jesus that he would like to stay on earth and see his grandchildren grow up. Sweet 93-year-old class member Miss Katherine was incredulous. “Well, I want to know who would want to come back!” she said emphatically. Then, she said, “I wouldn’t!” She is looking forward to heaven so much that she would want to stay there.

A cranky neighbor in the movie It’s a Wonderful Life yells, “Oh, youth is wasted on the wrong people!” Let’s embrace all of life’s seasons and not waste a single day of them.

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice!
Let your gentle spirit be known to all men.
The Lord is near.
Be anxious for nothing,
but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving
let your requests be made known to God.
And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension,
will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:4-7
