Lessons from the Nighttime Sky

When Ray, Mother, and I left for church late Sunday afternoon, the moon had already risen over the hills behind us. A thin mist softened its brilliant whiteness. The beauty was breathtaking.

The heavens are telling
of the glory of God;
And their expanse is declaring
the work of His hands.
Day to day pours forth speech,
And night to night reveals knowledge.
Psalm 19:1-2

Ray and I decided to stay up late to watch the lunar eclipse. We started watching about a quarter til eleven. By then the moon was high in the sky and the air was crystal clear — and thrillingly frigid. The twinkling stars shone brightly above the circle of hills that surround us.

Again and again we stepped out onto the porch and then back inside to get warm. Slowly the earth passed between the moon and the sun, turning the moon from white to red.

The God who moves the sun and moon and stars and planets through the sky on cold winter nights and in every season year in and year out loves you and those you love. We can trust Him. It is a great privilege to teach our children to trust Him, too.

When I consider Your heavens,
the work of Your fingers,
The moon and the stars,
which You have ordained;
What is man that You take thought of him,
And the son of man that You care for him?
Psalm 8:3-4

  1. Such a powerful witness & quite a lovely photo! I love how God’s quiet. message speaks louder than the noise of our world.

  2. When I was growing up in the ‘50s we would get up in the middle of the night to see a lunar eclipse. It was a wonderful experience. I would go to school the next day expecting that others had seen it and were remembering its wonder, but no one else even knew it had happened. I’m thankful for my family’s curiosity and wonder of God’s creation and its workings.
