Life is a Precious Gift and Every Life is Precious
Yesterday I told you about Romana Acosta Bañuelos. Her story fascinates me. I was sorry that my research didn’t tell me anything about her faith. I wish I knew that story, too. I did learn that students continue to receive scholarships from the generous scholarship fund she established in 1969.
As I was almost finished writing the post for yesterday, I searched for information about the scholarship fund. However, to my great joy, I came across the memorial tributes left on the website of the funeral home that the family used when Mrs. Bañuelos passed away in 2018. In all my research for writing history, this is the first time I have ever come across that kind of information about a famous person. The tributes touched my heart.
- A friend wrote of how proud they were to see Romana’s signature on the currency.
- An acquaintance said that he had only worked with her for nine months, but that he had very fond memories of her.
- A niece said that she was a beautiful soul and a grand lady.
- A distant family member said that she had only met Romana once, but that her father spoke often of his cousin Romana with great pride and affection.
- Mrs. Bañuelos’ granddaughter said that she remembered her grandmother’s sweet smile and how she would curl her hair in ringlets around her finger.
Life is a precious gift and every life is precious. I hope Mrs. Bañuelos knew how much her life meant to others. Today would be a good day to let someone know how much that person means to you and a good day to teach our children how much they can bless others by doing that, too.
