Light Is Stronger Than Darkness

This December must be a dark time for many people. I’m sure that many are lonely, many are depressed about the news, and many are struggling to make sense of the world swirling around them. Ray and I decided to dispel a bit of the darkness by the simple act of putting lights on our house and in our yard this year. We have always made the inside of our house glimmer, but doing this much outside is new for us. For us it is a statement of hope and light in a dark world. At least, when people drive by our house, they will see light for a moment.

Sometime back I found this star at an antique store for $4.00. It reminds me of a star I used to see when I was a girl. As we drove home from Nashville to Ashland City at night during the Christmas season, a house on a hill in Bordeaux always had a gigantic star that shone from very far away. It was a wonderful reminder of the star that the wise men followed. I can still see it shining 60 years later.

Jesus coming into the world was God’s answer to darkness. It still is. As Isaiah wrote:

The people who walk in darkness
Will see a great light;
Those who live in a dark land,
The light will shine on them.
Isaiah 9:2

All the people in our country who are walking around in darkness and who are living in a dark land still need light to shine on them.

Jesus said:

I am the Light of the world;
the one who follows Me will not walk in the darkness,
but will have the Light of life.
John 8:12

I am grateful that once each year people who haven’t thought about Jesus in a long time get glimpses and reminders of Him. And for those of us who think about Him every day, we must always remember that the light of Jesus is stronger than any darkness—any darkness—that we will ever face.

The same powerful and holy Son of God Who came to earth over 2,000 years ago is still Lord.

For a Child will be born to us, a Son will be given to us;
And the government will rest on His shoulders;
And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.
There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace
On the throne of David and over his kingdom,
To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness
From then on and forevermore.
The zeal of the Lord of armies will accomplish this.
Isaiah 9:6-7
