Mary’s Privilege and Ours

“Oh, me! These kids!”

Have you ever said — or thought — something like that when the toys are so thick on the couch that you can’t sit down or when your ten-year-old has just taken a favorite toy from your six-year-old or when the kitchen floor has more crumbs on it than your children put in their tummies during lunch?

Do you ever feel like adding your own screams to the chorus of kids’ screams you’re hearing from the other end of the house?

At those times, it is hard to remember what a privilege it is to be a mother — but it is a privilege.

This is how Mary expressed her gratitude for her privilege.

“My soul exalts the Lord,
And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.
For He has had regard for the humble state of His bondslave;
For behold, from this time on all generations will count me blessed.
For the Mighty One has done great things for me;
And holy is His name.”
Luke 1:46-49

Mary was privileged to be the mother of God’s own Son, the Savior of the world. She is the only one who has ever had that privilege, but we other mothers are privileged, too. Each of our children is gift from God, made in His image, and what wonderful gifts they are — even when the kitchen floor is crumby.

For You formed my inward parts;
You wove me in my mother’s womb.
I will give thanks to You,
for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Wonderful are Your works,
And my soul knows it very well.
Psalm 139:13-14
