Elevators, Bubbles, and Daffodils

While I wrote yesterday’s elevator stories, I thought of a description I have heard about people who are just a little different from “normal” — whatever in the world that is! You have probably heard it, too: “His (or her) elevator doesn’t stop at every floor.”

I’ve heard others: “Not playing with a full deck;” “One brick shy of a full load;” “Like Paul Revere’s ride, a little light in the belfry.” My all-time favorite was the one I learned from our wonderfully-talented woodworking friend. I’ll call him Teddy. He says that some people are “one bubble off plumb.”

Ray and I admire Teddy. He was not a Christian when we met him. We were privileged to watch him learn and think and slowly come to faith over many months.

I guess Teddy was something of a late-bloomer. School was not his thing. What he loved was creating things with his hands, and especially working with wood. We have a beautiful shelf that he made. The furniture he has created for his own family could be described as both art and furniture. He has been very successful in a career that gives him opportunities to use the talents God gave him.

Each Christmas we display the Noel plaque that Teddy made with his older daughter (I’ll call her Stephanie) and our older daughter, when they were little girls. Our daughters birthdays were just six days apart, and they spent many happy times together.

As Stephanie and her sister grew up, I watched with admiration the love that Teddy had for his girls and the amount of time he devoted to them. We were not surprised when he decided to move in with Stephanie and her family. We know he loves being a live-in grandpa for his homeschooled grandchildren. We also know that he is a good friend to Stephanie’s husband.

Do you have a late-bloomer in your house? Be a patient gardener.

Think about the daffodils blooming in your yard this spring. They don’t all open their petals at the same time.

I will give thanks to You,
for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Wonderful are Your works,
And my soul knows it very well.
Psalm 139:14
