Pictures to Make You Thankful

As I was writing a blog post recently, I looked for a picture from the Library of Congress to include. I entered the word “parent” in the search box. Like you, I have heard for years that a picture is worth a thousand words. This picture that came up in my search is very sweet and needs no words.

However, sometimes a picture with a few words of explanation is more powerful than a picture alone. I guess that is why we enjoy memes. Some of the other pictures that came up when I searched for “parent” needed their captions. Today I want to share four of those pictures, along with the exact Library of Congress captions. Pictures two and three have the exact same caption.

During the late 1930s and early 1940s, photographers working for the U.S. Farm Security Administration took photographs depicting various aspects of American life. John Vachon took these and other similar ones in Orange, Texas, during May of 1943.

Orange, Texas. In the extended school day-program in the public schools, some children of families where both parents are employed come to school as early as 6 a.m. to enable the parents to get to work. They go back to bed on cots in the school corridor. Then they get up and go through the regular school day. After school until the parents call for them, up to 6 p.m., they have a recreation program conducted on a hobby basis. These children are playing after school waiting for their parents to finish work.

Today I want these photos and captions to speak for themselves. If you ponder over them for a minute, I believe they will make you thankful for the day you are spending with your children.

Rejoice always; pray without ceasing;
in everything give thanks;
for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
