Reaching the Gate
When Ray and I got off the ship in Quebec City back in May, we had two plans for the day: 1) find the statue of Pierre Boucher at the parliament building and take a tour of the building, and 2) stroll around the beautiful historic city. As we took off on foot for the several block walk to the parliament building, we enjoyed the beautiful city along the way.
We stopped at a visitor center along the way and saw the first of many representations of Bonhomme (short for bonhomme de neige, which means snowman). Since 1954, he has been the mascot of Quebec City’s annual Winter Carnival.
As we neared the parliament building, we saw this beautiful gate in the city wall which still surrounds much of the oldest portions of the city. Quebec City is North America’s only walled city north of Mexico.
Ray and I had enjoyed our beginning strolls through the old city. We were almost to our destination. The statue we had come to see was beyond this gate. We were both anxious to get to the other side to see the earthly treasure made of bronze that we had walked so far to see. I look forward to showing you tomorrow what was beyond the gate.
Jesus spoke of the most important gate, a narrow one. The treasures on the other side of it are beyond compare to the treasures on the other side of any gate on earth. I am grateful for the gift of freedom and the gift of time that homeschooling gives mamas and daddies to show their children the narrow gate.
“Enter through the narrow gate;
for the gate is wide and the way is broad
that leads to destruction,
and there are many who enter through it.
For the gate is small
and the way is narrow that leads to life,
and there are few who find it.”
