She’s Glad They Didn’t Give Up

One group that has been especially welcoming to us since we moved to Gainesboro is the Jackson County Historical Society. Each year we look forward to hosting them for the December meeting. I love being with this group and I also love having an incentive to get our house completely decorated for Christmas by the second Monday in December.

This $5.00 little house has been part of our Christmas since the early 1980s when we and our little children lived in Mississippi.

Attendance at the November meeting was meager — a total of six or seven people. As I prepared for the party this past Monday, I kept wondering if attendance would be meager again; but to my delight, we had a great turnout. One new member, whom I first met at the November meeting, came with an energetic plan for how to advertise our county history, our museum, and our programs on social media. And to make it even better, she volunteered to implement the plan herself!

As folks were leaving, I walked out to the car with the president and his wife — I’ll call them Jack and Sarah. Many years ago both retired from teaching after long careers, she as a high school teacher and he as county superintendent. As we stood in the cold, starry night, Sarah shared her joy about this new burst of energy for the group. She talked about how they could have quit a long time ago and about her pleasure that something good happened after they held on long enough.

Jack and Sarah work hard in many areas of their lives, not just the Historical Society. They are great blessings for their friends, for their family, and for our church. This club isn’t what is most important to them, but they do care and they do bless many people through it. I rejoice with them that someone is coming alongside them to help.

I don’t know specifically what you need to keep holding while you wait for something important to you, but God does; and He cares about every detail of your life.

The end of a matter is better than its beginning;
Patience of spirit is better than haughtiness of spirit.
Ecclesiastes 7:8
