The Blueberry Lady

Each July the Blueberry Lady gives me a call to let me know that her blueberries are ready and each year I drive half an hour to buy her delicious blueberries. I walk through her beautiful yard to her beautiful handmade front door through her comfortable and pretty family room to her kitchen. Mrs. Birdwell is always cheerful, always generous, always helpful. We stand at her kitchen island while she helps me empty blueberries from her containers into mine. I listen to her laughing voice and look around at her beautiful home.

I’ve been there twice this week. She had two gallons ready for me on Monday and two gallons yesterday. On Monday Mr. Birdwell was there, too. The conversation was so fun that I really stayed longer than I meant to as I enjoyed their stories. I learned that he is a retired agricultural education and chemistry teacher from a local school system. When I told him about what our family does, he was so supportive.

All year we pull delicious blueberries from our freezer. So many blessings are in every bite. God in His wisdom created them long ago. Mr. and Mrs. Birdwell care for them on their farm. They and their farm helper pick them. Mrs. Birdwell gives me a call and we get to enjoy God’s blessings through their hands. It must feel good to be doing the same sort of work God gave Adam to do in the Garden of Eden.

The Lord God planted a garden toward the east, in Eden;
and there He placed the man whom He had formed . . . .
Then the Lord God took the man
and put him in the Garden of Eden to cultivate it and tend it.
Genesis 2:8,15

The Birdwells have a bumper crop this year and they are really looking for people who want to come and pick their own. Email me if you live in the area and would like to know how to contact them.
