Three Things My Parents Did Well

Yesterday Ray and I were reminiscing a bit about our teen years. The conversation reminded me of three key things that my parents did that were a great help to me.

My parents, Charles Leland and Evelyn Boyd

I told Ray:

  • Mother taught me to “do it,” like Mr. Rogers said.
  • Daddy taught me to have fun and to love people.
  • They both taught me that God is important. We never missed church if we were in town — not ever.

As I thought about what to write for you today, I realized that sharing these three strengths of my parents’ parenting could bless you in your parenting and homeschooling.

Concerning Mother’s encouragement to “do it,” Paul told the church at Colossae:

Whatever you do, do your work heartily,
as for the Lord rather than for men,
knowing that from the Lord
you will receive the reward of the inheritance.
It is the Lord Christ whom you serve.
Colossians 3:23-24

Concerning Daddy’s teaching me to have fun . . .

A joyful heart is good medicine,
But a broken spirit dries up the bones.
Proverbs 17:22

. . . and to love people:

Beloved, let us love one another,
for love is from God;
and everyone who loves
is born of God and knows God.
1 John 4:7

And concerning putting God first:

And He said to him,
“‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart,
and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’
This is the great and foremost commandment.”
Matthew 22:37-38
