I love God’s concept of day and night, weeks and seasons and years. He spoke of them in the very first chapter of His Word. These units of time give needed order to our lives.

So, now we begin a new year. Is it filled with hope and promise for you? Or is it filled with dread and fear?

During my recent girls’ day out with our daughter and her two daughters, we stepped inside a beautiful old hotel. We wandered around looking at the beautiful old woodwork and the exquisite recently-completed restoration. On our way in, we saw that the hotel has kept three old wooden telephone booths. After exploring other places, we made our way there to show them to the girls.

When we arrived, we saw a mama, grandmother, and little girl doing the same thing. The mama was trying to explain to her little five-year-old how these old telephones worked. The mama began talking to us about how hard it was to explain this old and unfamiliar technology to her little one.

Soon the mama was asking our five-year-old where she went to school. When our daughter told her that she homeschools, the mama talked with longing about how wonderful it is that she can do that. Then she began to tell us that she is a schoolteacher in a great rural high school (in another state) and that her daughter attends kindergarten in that district. She told us that they talk about Jesus and that “Bible man” visits their school. I gave her my card and told her about my blog. She said she would definitely check it out.

It was refreshing to hear this mama immediately start to talk about first things. As a homeschooling mama, you have the priceless, wonderful, fabulous opportunity to put first things first on the first day of the year and every day.

Many of the things that homeschooling mamas dread and fear relate to how their child will do in future tomorrows, ones that are near and ones that are many years away. Homeschooling mamas are tempted to worry about the things Jesus told us not to worry about.

How will my child’s life turn out?

Will they be able to support themselves?

In Matthew 6:25-31, Jesus talked about life and food and birds and lilies and clothing. Then He said:

For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things;
for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.
Matthew 6:32

Tomorrow is the first. It is a good day to lay down fear and dread and to decide to hope and trust God’s promises. However, today is an even better day to do that. Then we’ll all really be ready for a Happy New Year.

But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness,
and all these things will be added to you.
Matthew 6:33
