Work That Delights and Feels Important

Ray and I enjoyed visiting the St. Louis Art Museum with our son and two of our grandsons last week.

During most of our visit there, we wandered from gallery to gallery with little contact with members of the staff. Well, there was the time when I heard a man say, “Ma’am . . . ma’am . . .” before I realized I was looking a bit too closely at one of the paintings and had inadvertently stepped past the designated line on the floor.

However, in one gallery we met an enthusiastic attendant who obviously loved his work. He joyfully explained things we might find interesting. When he noticed one of our grandsons sitting out of the way on the floor while waiting for the rest of us to finish observing, the young man brought a folding chair and kindly offered him a seat.

When we began asking the young man about his work, he explained his various tasks, told us that he likes what he does, and showed us by his explanations that he believes his work to be important.

From the first time I heard the young man speak, I realized that he is likely considered to be somewhere on the autism spectrum. I was so happy to see him skilled in his work and obviously delighted to be in a position he knows is worthwhile.

A worthy goal for homeschooling mothers is to prepare her children with the skills they need to live life doing what they enjoy and feel is important, whether working fulltime at home taking care of a family or working in another career.

Do you see a man skilled in his work?
He will stand before kings;
He will not stand before obscure men.
Proverbs 22:29
