You Fit in with Us

My friend Susan introduced Ray and me to her loving, giving, heroic friend Margie and Margie’s sweet sister Robbie. When Robbie became unable to live alone, she and Margie moved in together. Now Margie takes tender care of her 90-year-old sister every day.

Robbie is a precious soul, too. She is especially supportive and kind to Ray and me. Robbie, Margie, and Susan are native Jackson Countians. Ray and I are not because, after all, we have only lived in beautiful Jackson County for 19 years.

That does not qualify us as natives. We are fine with that because sweet people like these women have welcomed us completely.

The last time we saw Robbie and Margie together, Robbie gave us a wonderful gift—the gift of belonging. She smiled her sweet smile and said, “You fit in with us.”

Belonging to God is a precious gift He gives to us.

But now listen, O Jacob, My servant,
And Israel, whom I have chosen:
Thus says the Lord who made you
And formed you from the womb, who will help you,
“Do not fear, O Jacob My servant;
And you Jeshurun whom I have chosen.
For I will pour out water on the thirsty land
And streams on the dry ground;
I will pour out My Spirit on your offspring
And My blessing on your descendants;
And they will spring up among the grass
Like poplars by streams of water.”
This one will say, “I am the Lord’s”;
And that one will call on the name of Jacob;
And another will write on his hand, “Belonging to the Lord,”
And will name Israel’s name with honor.
Isaiah 44:1-5

We all need a place where we fit in. Letting people know they fit in is a nourishing gift that we can give to others.

There is neither Jew nor Greek,
there is neither slave nor free man,
there is neither male nor female;
for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
Galatians 3:28
