A One Word Resolution

Until yesterday, the idea of a New Year’s resolution had barely passed through my mind. Yesterday, though, I thought of a one word resolution: love. This year:

  • I want to rest in the love of God and
  • I want to show Him how much I love Him and
  • I want every contact I have with the people in my life to reveal my love, and
  • I want always to keep love in mind.

In Matthew 22:36, a lawyer asked Jesus, “Which is the great commandment in the Law?”

Jesus’ answer included two quotes from the Old Testament. He said:

“You shall love the Lord your God
with all your heart, and with all your soul,
and with all your mind.”
This is the great and foremost commandment.
The second is like it,
“You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
Matthew 22:37-40

In Titus 2, when Paul told Titus how older women were to encourage young women, the first two encouragements were:

  • To love their husbands and
  • To love their children.

After Jesus told the lawyer what the first and second commandments were, He said that the whole Law and the Prophets hang on those two commandments. In a way we can say that, for a Christian, all other resolutions hang on that one word, love. Love is not only a good one word resolution for a Christian. It is a good one word guide for homeschooling mothers. May every lesson this year reveal your love to your children.

By this all people will know that you are My disciples:
if you have love for one another.
John 13:35
