A Time to Delight

Our house is so old that we use a pull chain to turn on the ceiling lights in almost half of the rooms. Even when we got a new light fixture for the dining room a few years ago, we had to have it modified to accommodate a chain. I think it’s fun to use pull chains, especially since I have learned to turn on the light in an adjacent room before I walk into a dark one. Trust me!

Twice I have walked into a dark room, after forgetting that I had left something lying in the floor. Kerplunk! Down I went, so I don’t do that anymore.  That’s when you learn the advantages of flipping on a switch by a door, rather than walking to the middle of the room to pull a chain!

The grandchildren think the pull chains are the bee’s knees! Recently the youngest was delighted when he got to pull the long one on the front porch — absolutely delighted. I love to watch children delight in things we adults have long seen as quite ordinary.

Today could be a day to feel blue, discouraged, scared, tired, or at least ho-hum. Let’s look for ways to feel delight.

The Library of Congress caption for this photo is: “Children were the pride, joy, beauty and chief delight of the quarter, Chinatown, San Francisco,” 1896.

Today let’s delight in our lives, our husbands, our homes, our books, our friends, our meals, our relatives, our clothes, our children . . . . Let’s take a close look at what delights the children in our lives — and let’s teach them what delights the Lord.

Thus says the Lord,
“Let not a wise man boast of his wisdom,
and let not the mighty man boast of his might,
let not a rich man boast of his riches;
but let him who boasts boast of this,
that he understands and knows Me,
that I am the Lord who exercises lovingkindness,
justice and righteousness on earth;
for I delight in these things,”
declares the Lord.
Jeremiah 9:23-24
