Yesterday afternoon we took a walk in Cincinnati’s Eden Park. Tucked into a tiny grove of trees was this fountain.

Two of our grandsons were enamored with the rippling water collecting at the bottom of its little waterfall.

I was captivated by the Bible verse surrounding the pool.

In Amos 5, God condemned the meaningless religious acts the Israelites were doing, meaningless because their lives didn’t match their worship. God said that He hated what they were doing. He rejected it.

Instead of showy religious stuff, God wanted the Israelites to:

. . . let justice roll down like waters

And righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.
Amos 5:24

Justice and righteousness were what God wanted Abraham to do. Justice and righteousness were also what God expected Abraham to command his children to do.

For I have chosen him,
so that he may command his children
and his household after him
to keep the way of the Lord
by doing righteousness and justice,
so that the Lord may bring upon Abraham
what He has spoken about him.
Genesis 18:19
