Children Love to Volunteer

Last weekend Ray and I along with Donna, our loyal customer turned new friend and customer service helper, displayed our curriculum at the Texas Home School Coalition (THSC) convention. Minutes before the doors opened last Friday morning, I sat at one of the tables set up in the middle of the vendor hall, finishing up some now-forgotten last-minute task. Suddenly a swarm of teen volunteers in matching lime-green shirts came en masse to the tables. At my table they whisked out a blue bandana and spread it in the middle of the table, put a little stand in the middle of the bandana, arranged a red bandana quickly and jauntily over the stand, and placed a THSC plaque in the center of it. The mass of volunteers had the tables decorated in a flash.

My surprise was that every volunteer in that particular battalion of the convention’s volunteer army was a teen boy!

They were obviously enjoying the opportunity to be helpful. Throughout the weekend, I saw the corps of teen volunteers here and there, performing their duties and enjoying being together and on a mission.

I remember feeling just the way they did when I was a teen and got the opportunity to volunteer. Feeling needed is a great feeling for anyone.

Whoever speaks, is to do so
as one who is speaking the utterances of God;
whoever serves is to do so
as one who is serving by the strength which God supplies;
so that in all things God may be glorified
through Jesus Christ,
to whom belongs the glory and dominion forever and ever.
Amen.
