Finding Something to Wear

Okay, girls, let’s ‘fess up. When was the last time you got dressed three times before it felt right? For me, it was yesterday morning. The first item on my agenda after breakfast was to make a very short video introducing a contest. It was like a scene from The Three Bears, except this time it wasn’t porridge that was too hot or too cold or chairs and beds that were too hard or too soft.

First, I wore a cobalt blue top with sleeves to my elbows. Filming went great. I had no trouble with the 36-second script — after we turned the script right side up. I was having trouble reading it upside down. Things were looking good until we watched the video on a computer screen. “Oops. I forgot that my cousin [who is a photographer] said you should wear 3/4 sleeves,” I said. “Maybe that’s what’s throwing it off,” said our team member Donna.

I decided to put on my purple top with 3/4 sleeves. When I didn’t find it in my closet, I tried the purple one with long sleeves. I threw it in the dryer to smooth out the wrinkles. I explained to Donna that I thought it was more fun. Teleprompter upright. Necklace straight. Fun purple top adjusted. The whole 36 seconds went great — again and again. Back to the computer. Uh-oh. That purple is too dull.

Sigh. Back to my closet and back to the crew in pink this time. Teleprompter upright. Necklace straight. Pink top adjusted. I show the result at the bottom of this post, but here’s the dress.

Spring 2018

This all reminds me of a story I told back in 2013. Ray and I had recently gone to church with some friends near Atlanta. Ray went to an adult Sunday School class with the husband. I went to the preschool class that the wife and their 20-something daughter were teaching. I enjoyed watching the mother/daughter team teach six little boys and two little girls. One of the girls was a visitor who had spent the night with her grandmother. During class I had noticed this granddaughter’s pretty dress. I had even wondered if I could copy the way the top was made. When the grandmother came to pick her up after class, like many of us grandmothers, she had a cute story to tell. That morning her granddaughter had said, “My dress is not perfect and my braids are poofy. I don’t like poofy braids.”

God said:

For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
So are My ways higher than your ways
And My thoughts than your thoughts.
Isaiah 55:9

He’s not concerned with imperfect dresses or poofy braids. He offers for us to be clothed with humility:

. . . all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another,
for God is opposed to the proud,
but gives grace to the humble.
1 Peter 5:5

With strength and dignity:

Strength and dignity are her clothing,
And she smiles at the future.
Proverbs 31:25

And with Christ:

For all of you who were baptized into Christ
have clothed yourselves with Christ.
Galatians 3:27
