Gathered ‘Round the Table

Yesterday was a travel-only day in our Texas Tour. All we actually had to do was get from Point A to Point B — Point A was San Angelo, Texas, and Point B was Austin, three and a half hours away. When one homeschooling family learned that we were going to be in their area on our one travel-only day, they invited us to go on a field trip with them. It was delightful.

We all went to Fort Concho in San Angelo. The family has been involved there for many years as volunteers. One of the ways they volunteer is by being part of a live nativity during the fort’s annual three-day Christmas celebration. Because of their great service there in a variety of ways, they were able to arrange a wonderful tour with Cory Robinson, the fort’s curator of history. He patiently showed us artillery and wagons, a bunkhouse, the dining hall, the fort’s headquarters, the reconstructed hospital, a building which housed officers and their families, and more. The facts, along with his excitement and enthusiasm, made his narration fascinating.

Notgrass History is planning to continue to create short history videos like the one we did recently about Laura Ingalls Wilder. We’ve been filming along the way during this trip. Yesterday Cory welcomed our filming the fort and his narration while we were on the tour. It was one of those mornings when I was so excited I was just bubbling over. Here are Ray and I at the end of the tour.

This kind Texas family not only showed generosity by giving us their time during the field trip; they even invited us to breakfast beforehand. The oldest son who is in his teens did the same thing he does every morning. He fixed breakfast for his family of six and yesterday morning he made enough for guests, too. Breakfast was delicious.

What a delight it was to sit around the table with these parents and children. I enjoyed seeing the rich learning environment they have created in their home and how they are making a difference in their community.

I was impressed with many things about this family. The note on their computer screen was one.
