How to Be a Great Mama

One of the books we enjoyed in our homeschool was Misty of Chincoteague by Marguerite Henry. We also enjoyed the 1961 movie based on the book. Though I haven’t seen that movie in several years, I can still see and hear Paul and Maurene’s grandfather telling the children that when you train a horse, you have to “gentle” him or her.

The idea of gentling is an important one for us mamas.

Proverbs 15:1 teaches us that gentle answers turn away wrath. I’ve seen that happen, haven’t you?

In Matthew 11:5, Jesus describes Himself as gentle and humble in heart. I want to be like Him. I know you do, too.

In Galatians 5:23, Paul tells us that gentleness is a fruit of the Holy Spirit.

In Galatians 6:1, Paul tells us how to restore someone who has gone astray. We mamas do a lot of helping children get back on the right track. Here’s how Paul says to do that: in “a spirit of gentleness.”

Paul told the Philippians to let their gentleness be known to all. Then he told them that the Lord is near. I certainly want to be gentle when He is near.

In the passage about unity in the Spirit in Ephesians 4, Paul tells us to walk with humility and gentleness. Those certainly go together, don’t they? I’m not sure we could have one without the other. And humility and gentleness certainly are unity preservers.

When Paul told the Thessalonians about how he and Silvanus and Timothy had treated them, he compared it to the gentleness of a nursing mother tenderly caring for her own children.

Like you, one of the dearest desires of my heart has been to be a great mother of great children. Listen to how God makes someone great.

You have also given me the shield of Your salvation,
And Your right hand upholds me;
And Your gentleness makes me great.
Psalm 18:35

  1. We LOVE Misty of Chincoteague!
    When our younger daughter was in high school, she did a ‘horse history’ unit study. We went to Chincoteague that July for Pony Penning Days and the Fireman’s Carnival for the auction. It was unforgettable memories!
    Great Biblical application. Thanks!
