Her Teaching Still Talks to Him

My daddy’s first cousin, Kenneth Wayne Head, is faithful to email several of us cousins. He keeps us up on the family news of the descendants of my great-grandparents, Jim and Cora Head. I showed you this photograph of Mama Head back in July. That’s Mama Head on the right with my Daddy as a baby and his mother, my Mama Sue.

Yesterday Kenneth Wayne sent an email on pretty Yahoo Mail stationery. It read:

Today is my mother’s birthday……
Hazel O. Wilson Head was born
on September 30, 1901.
She was a wonderful mother
and hope to see her again someday.
She would like the idea
of me sending this note to you.
Love,
Kenneth Wayne

I love that I got to know my Great Aunt Hazel and Great Uncle Clarence. Uncle Clarence and Mama Sue were two of  Jim and Cora Head’s nine children. I remember Aunt Hazel as little, smiling, and sugar sweet. I am touched by the entire email. The last sentence illustrates a truth from Proverbs. Aunt Hazel passed away decades ago, so it has been a long time since she taught Kenneth Wayne face to face. However, her teaching is still with him, just as Proverbs said it would be.

My son, observe the commandment of your father
And do not forsake the teaching of your mother . . .
When you walk about, they will guide you;
When you sleep, they will watch over you;
And when you awake, they will talk to you.
Proverbs 6:20, 21

Kenneth Wayne remembered what his mother would like. He loved doing what she would like in her honor and on her birthday. Wouldn’t she be smiling if she knew?

Family is one of God’s most precious gifts. Thank you for loving and cherishing yours — the generations before you and the generation you are rearing now.

Her children rise up and bless her
Proverbs 31:28
