Homeschooling’s Like Riding a Bicycle

I grew up in the center of downtown Ashland City, Tennessee, one block off of Main Street, right in the middle of all 2,000 of us Ashland Citians. From our back door, I could see Daddy Leland’s grocery store. To visit Daddy at work, all I had to do was to cross our backyard and Daddy Leland’s parking lot and walk in the back door. I did that often. From the left side of our house, I could see our school. From the front yard, I could see our church.

Church was a comfortable and constant part of our lives. Three times a week, Mother and Daddy led us across the street to church. During Vacation Bible School and the annual gospel meeting, we were there even more.

One year for Christmas my parents gave me a pretty blue bicycle. Daddy taught me to ride my bicycle in the church parking lot. I pedaled while he walked beside me, holding onto the back of my bike. I remember the day that he let go and I kept pedaling. I could ride my new blue bike all by myself! I spent many fun times riding my bicycle in the church parking lot and on the sidewalk. In my imagination, I was a trick rider in a show.

When we ride a bicycle, we are constantly moving slightly left or slightly right, making adjustments in order to stay upright.

Most of our lives are like riding a bicycle. We have to make adjustments. Maybe you started this school year with great plans about exactly how you wanted things to go, but now that it’s October, they aren’t going exactly as you hoped.

Try not to despair. Homeschooling is like riding a bicycle, too. You have to make adjustments.

Do not be anxious about anything,
but in every situation, by prayer and petition,
with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding,
will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:6-7
