Friday was a special day for Ray and me. We had the privilege of being homeschoolers again. One of our daughters’ children finished up their homeschool year that day. Our daughter invited us to come to an America the Beautiful party. We all dressed as characters from American history. Ray was President James K. Polk.

I was author Laura Ingalls Wilder.

Other characters included Farmer John (our son-in-law), a Civil War soldier (age 5), Paul Revere (age 3) with his stick horse, Jackie Robinson (age 11 months) with his baseball bat and cap, Minnijean Brown who helped integrate Little Rock Central High School (our daughter), an astronaut (age 8), and, to my surprise since we had not coordinated ahead of time, Laura Ingalls Wilder the young teacher (age 10).

It was a great joy to join our daughter’s family for breakfast. We made whipped cream, blueberry, and strawberry American flags . . .

. . . and played American history Bingo. She asked me to read aloud the last lesson of America the Beautiful. It is a lesson about the history of the 4th of July from 1776 to the present. We watched a YouTube video of the song “America the Beautiful,” illustrated with beautiful scenes across this great land that God created.

America! America!
God shed His grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

One of the joys of homeschooling is the opportunity to learn about, celebrate, pray for, and be grateful for our wonderful country.

Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake
to every human institution,
whether to a king as the one in authority,
or to governors as sent by him
for the punishment of evildoers
and the praise of those who do right.
For such is the will of God,
that by doing right you
silence the ignorance of foolish people.
Act as free people,
and do not use your freedom as a covering for evil,
but use it as bond-servants of God.
Honor all people, love the brotherhood,
fear God, honor the king.
1 Peter 2:13-17
